Defending Champs Just for Fun Knock Off Judaeans 16-6 for Third Straight Win

Sept. 10, 2007 — Seven-time defending champions Just for Fun (JFF) claimed their third victory in a row after dropping their season opener, pounding Judaeans 16-6 in five innings.
The game, the first of four Sunday in Quarren Schjang softball action, was a fairly close contest through three innings, but the champs began to pull away in the fourth. The game was called in the top of the fifth after the umpire ejected a Judaeans player from the game, leaving the team with only eight eligible players. At the time, Just for Fun (JFF) was hitting and had already plated two runs with no one out.
Batting first, JFF scored five runs on a three-run shot off the bat of Raymond Cintron and back-to-back solo shots by Gary Molloy and Myron Johannes. Judaeans responded with a two-run home run off the bat of Alphonso Hall to trail 5-2 after one inning.
JFF scored three more runs in the top of the second on an RBI single by Eustace Davis and two unearned runs on Judaeans errors to extend their lead to six at 8-2. Judaeans answered with three runs of their own on a two-run triple by Ronald Hall and an RBI double by Alphonso Hall to trail by three again at 8-5.
Edwin Sankitts’ RBI single gave JFF another run in the top of the fourth, but Judaeans was equal to the task in the bottom of the inning, picking up a run on an RBI double by Ronald Hall. The JFF lead remained at three at 9-6.
JFF then blew the game wide open in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on a three-run bomb over the center-field fence by Dave Schjang and RBI singles by Molloy and Johannes to go up 14-6. Judaeans had no answer in the bottom of the inning.
JFF continued their offensive onslaught in the top of the fifth, and looked set to turn the game into a laugher. They had already plated two runs on a two-run blast by cleanup hitter Guido Schjang and had another runner on base with no outs when the Judaeans player was ejected from the game.
Herminio Velasquez pitched the win for JFF, while Jose Rivera took the loss for Judaeans. Molloy led the JFF offensive onslaught by going 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Cintron was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Johannes was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. For the Judaeans, A. Hall was 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs and R. Hall was 2 for 2 with three RBIs.
