Aug. 27, 2007 — The Quarren Schjang defending champions, Just For Fun, rebounded from an opening-day forfeit loss with a 23-7 shellacking Sunday of Divi Carina.
The seven-time defending champions pounded out 20 hits, including four home runs, sending a message to the rest of the league that they will be the team to beat for the eighth consecutive season. In their season opener, the defending champions lost to Mash Up by way of forfeit when only five players showed up for the game at the D.C. Canegata ballpark. They showed up in force Sunday night, however, and it did not bode well for Divi Carina.
Batting first, JFF scored five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. They scored five runs on a two-run single by Kai Schjang, an RBI single by Guido Schjang, a sacrifice fly by Dave Schjang and an error. Divi Carina came up empty in the bottom of the inning.
JFF was back on the attack in the top of the second, scoring four runs on a three-run shot by Kai Schjang and an RBI single by Reuben Mercado to go up 9-0. Divi Carina got on the board with five runs in the bottom of the inning on a grand slam by Dario Linares and an RBI single off the bat of Manny Acevedo to trail 9-5 after two innings of play. It would be as close as they would get.
After a scoreless third, JFF rookie Dave Schjang blasted his first home run, a three-run shot over the center-field fence to push his team to a seven-run advantage at 12-5. Divi Carina could only answer with one run on an RBI single off the bat of Tony Cruz. They now trailed 12-6 at the end of four innings.
The score would stay that way until the sixth inning, when JFF scored three more runs in the top of the inning on a two-run double by Charles Brow and a solo blast by Raymond Cintron to lead 15-6 after five and a half innings. Divi Carina scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single off the bat of Cruz to trail 15-7.
The defending champs really put a stamp on the game in the top of the seventh when they erupted for eight runs, leading to the 23-7 final score. Cintron blasted his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to left center, and Guido Schjang had a solo blast. The JFF runs came as a result of RBI singles by Myron Johannes, Brow and Dave Schjang, along with a Divi error. Divi Carina went quietly in the bottom of the inning.
Johannes pitched the win for JFF, while Leonard Frett got the loss for Divi Carina. Cintron led the JFF attack, going 3 for 6 with two home runs and four RBIs. Kai Schjang went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs; Guido Schjang 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs; and Dave Schjang 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. For Divi Carina, Linares went 2 for 4 with a grand slam and four RBIs, Cruz went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Edwin Rivera went 4 for 4.
