Nominations Sought for UVI Staff Council Officers
The Ad Hoc Committee of the UVI Staff Council (UVISC) is seeking nominations for officers to serve on the council. The deadline for nominations to be received is Monday, August 27.
Details of the nomination process, including the positions to be filled, voter eligibility and the schedule of the voting process, are available from the UVI Staff Council section of the UVI Announcements (intranet) web page. A nomination form is also available for download.
The Ad Hoc Committee encourages the entire UVI staff community to participate in this process so that the mission outlined in the UVISC Bylaws can be achieved.

Health Services Schedule Announced for St. Thomas Campus
The UVI Health Services Office on the St. Thomas Campus has announced the following services schedule for the Fall Semester. Times are subject to change without notice. For details, contact Health Services Supervisor Ronda Hatchett at 693-1124.
Health Services Office:
• Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays — 9 am. to 9 p.m.
• Tuesdays and Thursdays — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Physician Hours:
• Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays — Noon to 1 p.m.

Access to UVI's New Blackboard May Require Resetting Passwords
UVI's Information Technology Services department is advising that students who are having difficulty logging on to the new Blackboard site may need to have their passwords reset. Instructors may reset passwords or they may refer students to the helpdesk@uvi.edu – 693-1466. There are multiple student entries in the database, please select the account that corresponds with the last four digits of the student's UVI ID number.

UVI End-of-Year Recess Schedule Set
UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has approved the University's 2007-2008 Administrative end-of-year holiday recess. UVI offices will be closed for the holiday recess from Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008. Offices will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008.
In observance of the St. Croix Christmas Festival and Three Kings Day holidays, UVI offices will also be closed on Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, and Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, respectively.

August 24 Is Deadline to Apply for MMES Campus Visit Program
Friday, Aug. 24, is the deadline to apply for a three-day campus visit/recruitment experience for individuals interested in enrolling in UVI's recently launched Master of Marine and Environmental Science (MMES) degree program. The campus visit – scheduled for Oct. 11 to 14 – will include tours of UVI's St. Thomas facilities and an overnight trip to the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station on St. John. All interested persons are welcome to apply. Additionally, ten to twenty full scholarships for the three-day visit will be available for students or natural resource professionals who wish to continue their education and who reside in Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member countries or in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Ten students are scheduled to begin studies in the two-year MMES program this fall. The deadline for applications for the program's second cohort of students (beginning studies in the fall of 2008) will be in February 2008.
Application Deadline Extended for Young Women's Leadership Conference
UVI's Health Services Center will host a Young Women's Leadership Conference on Saturday, Nov. 3, on the University's St. Thomas campus. The deadline to submit applications to participate has been extended to September 30. Approximately 100 women between the ages of 17 and 26 are expected to attend the free event. The conference is being organized by Just In Time, Inc., a nonprofit community organization that provides educational, career development training, counseling and community outreach services to youth and young adults. Virgin Islands students as well as participants from several U.S. states are expected to attend. Application forms are available from the Health Services offices on UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. • Sunday, August 26 – $5 discounted tickets for UVI students to attend the Car Show in the Sports and Fitness Center.

• Friday, August 24 — Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) information and recruiting session – 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UVI Cafetorium.
• Sunday, August 26 — UVI Community beach picnic – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Fort Frederiksted Beach.
September 6 Seminar to Outline SBA's Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative
A free seminar on the Small Business Administration's (SBA) Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, on St. Thomas. Presenter Carl Christensen, Virgin Islands branch manager for the SBA, will outline the Patriot Express Loan Initiative. The initiative is designed for veterans and members of the military community who want to establish or expand small businesses. The session, which was rescheduled from August 23, will be held at the UVI Small Business Development Center's training facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Spanish for English Speakers Course Set for St. Croix
Individuals interested in acquiring a basic level of skill in Spanish are urged to register for a course being hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. Spanish for English Speaking People will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday from September 6 until October 11. Sessions will be held at the newly dedicated, Joseph E. Simpson Building in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
The course is designed for individuals with no prior knowledge of the Spanish language, but would like to understand and speak in Spanish. Participants will learn how to recognize basic Spanish words, use words in the correct context during conversation, hold a basic conversation in Spanish and much more.

Basic Writing Course Offered Beginning September 10 on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong
Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course for individuals interested in enhancing their business writing skills on St Croix. Essentials of Business Writing will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, from Sept. 10 to 26. Sessions will be held at the newly dedicated, Joseph E. Simpson Building in Frederiksted, St. Croix. The course will help individuals get started, organize thoughts and present their message in a way that will achieve positive results. Students will learn to craft clear, simple sentences that get the point across, avoid common pitfalls in writing business correspondence, quickly analyze, organize, write and revise documents and much more.

Basic Computer Course for Seniors to Begin September 11 on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands' Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course for senior citizens on St. Croix interested in learning to use the computer this fall. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from September 11 through 27. Sessions will be held at the newly dedicated, Joseph E. Simpson Building in Frederiksted, St Croix.
The course will cover computer basics such as working with windows, using the internet, emailing, safe computing and more. Information will be presented in an easy to understand format. CELL to Offer Bookkeeper Certification Course Beginning September 11
Professional bookkeepers interested in obtaining nationally recognized certification can now take advantage of a preparatory course at UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. The course is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting September 11. Sessions will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
The course is designed to prepare individuals for the National Certified Bookkeepers Examination. Certification is awarded by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.
