Brief: St. Thomas Team Bound for Little League World Series

July 30, 2007 — The St. Thomas Junior League baseball team is bound for the Little League World Series, but they got an early honor when the governor congratulated the team on winning the Latin American Regional Junior League championship in Panama.
Gov. John de Jongh, Jr. met the team at the Cyril King Airport on St. Thomas Sunday night as part of a recognition ceremony when it returned home from Panama, according to a Government House news release.
“It is the first time that a Virgin Islands team has advanced to the Little League World Series out of the regional tournament, and I thought it important to be a part of the heroes’ welcome planned for the members of the team … to show our support for our young people who set high performance standards for themselves.” deJongh said.
The team will travel to Michigan Aug. 12 to represent Latin America in the Junior League World Series. “I see these young athletes as having the drive and the determination to win,” deJongh said. “This series of games will be the perfect opportunity to show the world the talent that the V.I. possesses.”
