Art Camp Students Commemorate Local Artist

July 29, 2007 – Youngsters who have been attending local artist Danica David's "Seventh Annual Creative Adventure Summer Art Program" will have an opportunity to present a painting in memory of the late Maria Henle to her family and display their work in a one-night exhibition, 5:30-7:30 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 3, at St. George Village Botanical Garden. The public is invited.
Maria Henle, who died earlier this year, has been an active part of the camp from the beginning when it was based in downtown Christiansted. She always set aside time for the students each year so that they could visit her gallery, Maria Henle Studio, which is located in Christiansted. Henle went on many field trips and attended several award ceremonies over the years. "She was always very patient and kind. We miss her dearly," said David, the director of the program. During the past four weeks, students have created art, gardened, and worked on the painting to commemorate her. The painting will hang permanently at St. George Village Botanical Garden.
Students have also been creating artwork that will be printed onto note cards. The image of the commemorative painting for Henle will also be available on note cards, which will be available in December.
Several other local artists all taught art to the students and have contributed to the program this year: Nancy Brynes, Tomas Lanner, Elisa Mc Kay, Therese Trudeau and Niarus Benjamin Walker.
The program was funded in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, Neighborhood Auto Parts and Glass Inc. and Danica Art Gallery. Photographers are invited to come out to the garden to view the students between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. by Aug. 3
