Brief: Power Outage Caused by Latest of Dozens of Car Accidents

July 12, 2007 — Power went out on St. Croix to all points west of West Airport Road Thursday afternoon from about 2 p.m. to just after 3:15 p.m.
A car struck a power line pole, causing the outage. There has been something of an epidemic of such accidents on St. Croix over the past year.
“This is the 67th time a car has hit a pole since last August,” said V.I. Water and Power Authority Spokeswoman Cassandra Dunn. “It was a hit and run. When we and the police got there, there was a Toyota four-door sedan but no people.”
The accident occurred in Frederiksted at the corner of Percy Gardine Avenue and Smithfield Road. When the vehicle struck the pole, the force broke the connection at the top of the pole linking it to the power lines.
