Humane Society Announces Scholarship Recipients

June 18, 2007 – The Humane Society of St. Thomas announced the three recipients of $1,000 scholarships on Father's Day at a luncheon following its traditional Red, White and Blue Golf Tournament. All three recipients were present for the announcement and check presentation. The luncheon was held at the Mahogany Run conference center.
The three scholarship recipients are Elizabeth C. Davis, who has a degree in biology from Brown University and just completed her first year at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine; Shenell Gordon, who will enter the Master of Marine and Environmental Science degree program at the University of the Virgin Islands in the autumn; and Agene' Rogers, who recently graduated as valedictorian of the St. Thomas/St. John Seventh-Day Adventist School Class of 2007 and who will enter UVI in the fall as a biology major. Davis is the daughter of Mac and Debbie Davis, Gordon is the daughter of Elbridge Gordon, and Rogers is the son of Ash and Delpha Rogers, all of St. Thomas.
To receive the Humane Society scholarships all three recipients must be enrolled in a program focused on an animal related field, complete an application form, provide copies of their grades from the last three semesters, attach three letters of recommendation, and provide proof of volunteer work with an organization promoting animal welfare. Each candidate wrote an essay on the "human-animal bond," which weighed heavily in the decision process.
