Visiting Marine Mammal Specialist to Give Public Seminar at UVI
A seminar on the acoustic behavior of whales and dolphins will be presented at UVI by visiting scientist Shane Guan at noon on Wednesday, June 13. Guan, who is participating in a scientific research and outreach program hosted aboard the Explorer of the Seas cruise ship, will speak at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus. A videoconference link will be available in Evans Center room 302A on the St. Croix campus. Guan is a marine mammal specialist with the Office of Protected Resources of the National Marine Fisheries Service. His seminar will focus on how whales and dolphins utilize sound in communication, navigation and prey searching.
Guan will also address ways in which increasing undersea sounds from human activities may have a profound negative impact on marine mammals. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of VI-EPSCoR's 2006-07 Seminar Series designed to show how marine research is of importance to the Virgin Islands and its people. June 13 Is Deadline to Register for UVI Beekeeping Workshop
June 13 is the deadline to pre-register for a four-hour, Introduction to Beekeeping Workshop to be offered by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service (CES) and the V.I. Department of Agriculture from June 23 through July 1. The workshop is designed for individuals interested in beekeeping as a hobby or as a small business. Workshop presentations will be offered on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, and on St. John. Exact dates, as well as specific locations, will be announced after organizers determine the amount of public interest based on pre-registrations. Workshops on Parasite Management Set Today and June 16 on St. Croix
Two workshops titled "Novel Approaches for Small Ruminant Internal Parasite Management in the Tropics" will be offered by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) on St. Croix. Stuart Weiss, the AES acting agronomy program leader, will be the presenter. The first workshop will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today (Monday, June 11) in room 133 of the Research and Extension Center building on UVI's St. Croix campus. The second workshop will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at the Sejah Farm, at the corner of Mid-land Road and Route 65. The workshops are sponsored by the V.I. UVI Board of Trustees to Meet June 16 on St. Croix Campus
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly meeting at 9 a.m. on June 16, in the Great Hall North West Wing on the St. Croix campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items. President LaVerne E. Ragster will give the President's Report, followed by Chairman's Comments from Board Chairman Dr. Auguste E. Online Registration Continuing for Summer Session, Fall Semester
Online registration for UVI's upcoming second summer session and for the 2007 fall semester is in progress. UVI's online registration system, called BUCSS for Banner Utilization Central for Self Services, can be accessed from the BUCSS logo on UVI's home page – www.uvi.edu. Registration for Summer Session II continues through June 20. Classes will begin on June 22.
UVI to Offer Online, Summer Session Course in Medical Terminology
An online course in medical terminology (NUR 100 CRN 50405) will be offered by the University of the Virgin Islands during the upcoming second summer session, from June 22 through July 27. Medical terminology is a specialized language used by health care practitioners. The course is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in the health care or pharmaceutical industries, or for those who wish to communicate more effectively with physicians, dentists, nurses and other medical professionals. Since this is an interactive, online course, students must have basic computer skills and Internet access. Little prior knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology is required. UVI to Accept Bids on Three Vehicles
The University of the Virgin Islands Purchasing Department has announced it will accept sealed bids on three vehicles it wishes to sell. Bid packages will be available from the Purchasing Purchasing Department from today (June 11) through June 22, 2007, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Vehicles offered for sale are:
– One (1) 1988 Toyota 2×4 Standard (Item A – Color: Red)
– One (1) 1994 Jeep Cherokee Automatic (Item C – Color: White)
– One (1) 2002 Jeep Liberty Automatic (Item D – Color: White)
The vehicles are located at the Physical Plant building on the St. Thomas campus. Items will be sold "as is." Only sealed bids will be accepted for the purchase of these items. The bid opening will be at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the Purchasing Department Conference Room. Updated maps of UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses are now included on the UVI web site. The maps, which are in a printer-friendly format, are available from the "Take a Virtual Tour" link on the UVI home page – http://www.uvi.edu. – and from the "Site Index" page. A customized Google Maps page of the Virgin Islands, showing UVI's campus locations, is also available.
UVI Stars Seeking Members for Second Relay for Life Team
Members of the UVI community who wish to participate in the 2007 Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on St. Thomas are invited to join a second UVI team. Team co-captain Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre said that while the UVI Stars team has met its goal of 15 members, there has been additional interest. Anyone wishing to join a second team is invited to attend a team meeting at 12:15 p.m. today (Thursday, June 7) in Humanities room 200. The Relay for Life is scheduled for Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, at the Charlotte Amalie High School track.
