Two Election Day Comments

Dear Source:
In a recent letter to the editor, Constitutional convention candidate Robert Kunkel expressed dismay that neither he nor another candidate, "received a form from the paper asking for … information" about his platform. With all due respect, I do recall reading in both local newspapers their respective offer to all candidates to submit such information for inclusion in a special supplement. I can't imagine any media source going out of its way to directly approach each and every one of the 123 candidates personally asking for this information which was published gratis as a public service.
On a related matter, I was rather disappointed to read that our new Governor designated this election day as a holiday. The move has been on for years to REDUCE government holidays and, given the current fiscal crisis of the islands, I find his decision flabbergasting, not to mention that the public turnout to the various discussions has been reported as abysmally low.
The polls are open from 7AM to 7PM which gives any worker ample time to vote. At most, a paid couple of hours off would be more than sufficient time for any worker to do their civic duty. Needless to say, the "day off" will only really apply to government employees while the private sector will be doing business as usual.
