UVI Trustees to Meet June 16 on St. Croix Campus
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly meeting at 9 a.m., on June 16, in the Great Hall North West Wing on the St. Croix campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items. President LaVerne E. Ragster will give the President's Report, followed by Chairman's Comments from Board Chairman Dr. Auguste E. Rimpel Jr. Following the chairman's comments, the board will consider several items that require action. A news release is available from the UVI home page.
UVI Stars Seeking Members for Second Relay for Life Team
Members of the UVI community who wish to participate in the 2007 Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on St. Thomas are invited to join a second UVI team. Team co-captain Dr. Patricia Harkins-Pierre said that while the UVI Stars team has met its goal of 15 members, there has been additional interest. Anyone wishing to join a second team should contact Harkins-Pierre at 693-1357. The Relay for Life is scheduled for Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, at the Charlotte Amalie High School track.
Constitution 2008 Project Schedules At-Large Delegate Candidate Forum
The VI Constitution 2008 public education project has scheduled a delegate candidate forum for all at-large Constitutional Convention candidates for 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. The forum will be conducted via teleconference from the Chase Auditorium, Room B-110, on UVI's St. Thomas campus and the Melvin Evans Center, EVC 401, on the St. Croix campus of the University.
June 8 Is Registration Deadline for UVI's 4-H Summer Camp Program
UVI's 4-H Summer Academy 2007 will be held from June 25-August 3 on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John. The six-week summer camp program is for children ages 5-14. The registration deadline is Friday, June 8. Registration on St. Croix will take place at the Research and Extension Center room 139. St. Thomas registration is available in the 4-H office located in the New House Building on the St. Thomas campus. Registration on St. John is available in the office of Sen. Carmen Wesselhoft in the Legislature Building in Cruz Bay. The registration fee is $175 for the first child, and $150 for each additional child. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. International Group to Participate in Aquaponics, Aquaculture Course
A record high 63 participants are expected to participate in the six-day, short course in aquaponics and tilapia aquaculture to be offered by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station beginning on June 17. Dr. James Rakocy said the international group will study the principles and practical application of the aquaponic and biofloc culture systems developed by UVI. Participants learn the technology involved, including fish handling, vegetable production and systems operation. UVI to Host Caribbean Healthcare Conference June 8-9 on St. Thomas
UVI, in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic of Florida and hospitals in the Virgin Islands, will host a Caribbean Healthcare Conference on June 8 and 9 at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort on St. Thomas. Funded by a grant from the V.I.'s 26th Legislature, the conference is designed to strengthen regional cooperation in the delivery of health care services. It is intended for health care professionals, administrators and others interested in the delivery of health care services in the Caribbean. A news release is available from the UVI home page.
Tempo Returns to USVI on June 9; Discounted Student Tickets Available
Tempo returns to the USVI at 6 p.m. on June 9 with "Rock de Tempo," a concert at Lionel Roberts stadium on St. Thomas featuring Shaggy, Rayvon, Maxi Priest, Pressure, Shurwayne Winchester & Traffik, Tessane Chin, Etana, P'your Passion and Cool Sessions Brass. Tempo VJs will be on hand, as will Tempo creator Frederick Morton of St. Croix. Tickets are $40. UVI students (with ID) can buy $25 tickets at the Reichhold Center Box Office and UVI Bookstore.
Advanced Basic Boating Course Begins Monday at SBDC Training Facility
The St. Thomas Sail and Power Squadron will present its three-week, Advanced Basic Boating Course at UVI's Small Business Development Administration (SBDC) Nisky Center Training Facility beginning on Monday, June 11. The free course will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays through June 27. The cost for navigation and plotting materials, and books, is $60. Graduates earn certificates that are recognized world-wide. For more information, call Tom McCoy at 774-2715.
