June 7, 2007 — Gov. John deJongh Jr. proclaimed Tuesday a legal holiday in the territory to facilitate the special election scheduled to elect delegates to the Fifth Constitutional Convention, according to a Government House news release.
It is of utmost importance that the people of the Virgin Islands participate in the election of the delegates to the convention, the news release said.
“The people elected to this constitutional convention will be tasked with an enormous responsibility to the community of the Virgin Islands," deJongh said, according to the news release. "We, as a territory, cannot continue to operate without our own constitution and guidelines. I look forward to working with those who are elected and wish all who run good luck.”
DeJongh declared the holiday in an effort to eliminate any impediments to the election of delegates to the convention, the news release said. The governor called on all residents of the territory to participate in "this important electoral process," the news release said.
