Brief: Pro Athletes Will Give Free Lessons to Young People at UVI Clinics

June 6, 2007 — Pro football, basketball and golf players from the NFL, NBA and LPGA will give free lessons at UVI to young St. Croix athletes the last weekend in June, according to a UVI news release.
The free youth sports clinics for kids 9 to 15 are being held as part of the Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands Celebrity Golf Tournament weekend on St. Croix. The clinics will feature tips and training with current and former NFL and NBA players, along with star golfer Andia Winslow. In 2006, Winslow became the first African-American to play in an LPGA Tour event in five years.
"The game of golf is becoming increasingly accessible as a recreation and competitive venture for everyone, young people in particular," Winslow said, according to the news release. "I hope to share stories of the benefits of regular physical activity and education."
Winslow was the first African-American to play golf in the Ivy League. She earned a degree in sociology from Yale University in 2004.
"Over the past two years, the interest in the FUVI Youth Sports Clinics has grown tremendously," said Mitchell Neaves, UVI's director of Annual Giving and organizer of the clinics. "Now we are at the point where the professional leagues are handpicking guys to send to St. Croix. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for anyone to be instructed by some of the best in the business."
Registration for the clinics begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 29, at UVI's St. Croix campus and at the Carambola Golf Club. Some official team gear will be given out, but supplies are limited.
The football clinic will be held at UVI's west intramural field near the entrance to campus. Current and former NFL players will work with kids on improving their passing, kicking and catching, and give them an introductory course on conditioning.
The basketball clinic will take place behind the UVI bookstore at the outdoor basketball courts. Current and former NBA players will provide instruction on shooting, passing and basic defensive and offensive techniques.
The golf clinic will be held at the Carambola Golf Club. Winslow and others will help young golfers improve their swing and give pointers on putting practice.
The clinics are free, but all participants must have a consent form signed by a parent or legal guardian. This form can be found on the FUVI Celebrity Golf Classic website at www.uvi.edu. Participants must wear athletic clothing that will allow them to perform in the specific clinics. T-shirt, shorts and sneakers are recommended.
When the clinics are over, the professional athletes will sign autographs. Each participant can have one object signed. Parents are encouraged to come out and watch, too.
Call UVI at 693-1046 to sign up for the football and basketball clinics on the St. Croix campus and the Carambola Golf Club at 778-5638 for the golf clinic.
The Prosser ICC Foundation is a presenting partner of the FUVI Celebrity Golf Classic.
