Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned for St. Thomas and St. Croix

May 24, 2007 — Ceremonies will be held in both districts Monday as the territory joins the rest of the nation in the observance of Memorial Day.
Gov. John deJongh Jr. called on all Virgin Islanders to join in the observance of Memorial Day by attending one or all of the events in their respective districts, according to a news release from Government House.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to those who have died in service to our nation’s Armed Forces,” deJongh said. “Let’s take time on this Memorial Day to honor those who gave their lives and those who continue to risk their lives for the ideals we cherish.”
On St. Thomas, the Office of Veterans Affairs and the American Legion Patrick U. George Post 90 will host the day’s activities, which include a wreath-laying and flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. at Western Cemetery One.
From there, a procession will head up Main Street and across Veterans Drive to the Coast Guard dock for a seaside ceremony and casting of a wreath. A Memorial Day program will take place at Emancipation Garden at 11 a.m.
The Memorial Day observance on St. Croix will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday with a procession from Bassin Triangle to the Christiansted Cemetery. There a special graveside tribute will take place followed by a seaside ceremony at Christiansted Wharf. The Memorial Day program on St. Croix will follow and will feature musical selections, remarks by officials, a roll call of desceased veterans and the playing of “Taps.”
Memorial Day is a federal holiday across the nation and in the territories and possessions of the United States.
