April 11, 2007 — Senate Vice-President and Chairman of the Committee on Government Operations and Consumer Protection Senator Shawn-Michael Malone expressed excitement for several road projects in the territory.
“I am happy to say my staff and I, along with members of the Department of Public Works, have been on a massive campaign to improve the deplorable road conditions in the Virgin Islands. For years, residents and tourists have complained of our road conditions. With these projects, Virgin Islanders can see their tax money being used to immediately improve their quality of life,” Malone expressed.
Some road projects include:
? Estate Frydenhoj roads: work is underway to repair several major and minor roadways in the Estate Frydenhoj area including the hill adjacent to the Buddha Bar Sushi restaurant
? Estate Nazareth: extensive work has been completed on the notorious road parallel to the National Guard Armory including the roadway leading to the Pillsbury Heights neighborhood
? Hospital Ground/Hospital Lane area: work is ongoing in this area including the roadway running parallel to the Queen Louise Home for the Aged as well as several connecting roadways
? Estate Tabor & Harmony: construction to a retaining wall to support an undermining roadway is ongoing at this present time
? Estate Mon Bijou: a $12.7M road improvement and flood mitigation project is underway to provide residents with much-needed flood relief
“As early as November and December 2006 during the holiday season, we were also able to survey and pave thoroughfares throughout the Estate Bovoni area, commonly referred to as Dominica Hill, and the Estate Nadir area, commonly known as Sanchez Town, where abandoned and derelict vehicles were also removed in order for progress to continue. As most know, these areas are near and dear to me as this is the neighborhood where I grew up,” Malone added.
“Finally, I want to thank the Department of Public Works and the private contractors who were awarded bids for their tireless work to improve our roadways. Now, our residents can have a comforting experience while traversing these roads. I pledge to continue my efforts to improve the quality of life across the territory,” Malone concluded.
