Summer Session and Fall Registration Details Featured in Registrar's Newsletter
An updated Registrar's Office Newsletter has been posted to the UVI web site. Details about online registration for UVI's upcoming summer sessions and the 2007 fall semester are featured. Online registration begins on April 2. The newsletter also lists dates for the upcoming Computer Literacy Exam (CLE) and the English Proficiency Exam (EPE). The newsletter is available from the "Other UVI Sites" and "Students" links on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu – or at this direct link.
Galathea 3 Scientists Set Presentation on St. Croix Marine Life for March 29
Researchers from the University of Southern Denmark will present a review of their study of the history of St. Croix's marine life at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, March 29). The session will be held in Nursing building R-1. Scientists Morten Karnøe Søndergaard, Maibritt Bager, Bo Ejstrud and Niels Chr – participants in the Galathea 3 expedition – will present their methods and the current status of their work, focusing on historical understanding of marine life and the use of geographical information systems to interpret old maps. St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) Executive Director Carol Cramer-Burke said the project provides interesting comparisons between the historical and current status of reefs and fish populations around St. Croix. The presentation is sponsored by SEA and the UVI Marine Advisory Service. It is free and open to the public. For details, call the SEA office at 773-1989.
Lady Bucs and Buccaneers Eliminated from LAI Playoffs
UVI's Lady Bucs varsity basketball squad was eliminated from LAI postseason play after dropping two playoff games this week. The Lady Bucs lost a road game to Inter American University, 71-47, on Monday. Then, on Wednesday, in a home game against UPR-Carolina that was shifted from 6 p.m. to a noon start, they fell 64-61. The Lady Bucs finished this inaugural LAI season with 10 wins and seven losses.
UVI's Buccaneers men's varsity basketball team was eliminated from the LAI League playoffs, losing to UPR-Turabo, 84-62, on Wednesday, March 28, in Puerto Rico. The Bucs also lost their opening playoff game last Friday against Catholic University of Ponce, 73-57. The Bucs finish the season with six wins and 10 losses.
WINMARGIN Scientists Conclude Studies in Virgin Islands Waters
Scientists working in the WINMARGIN portion of the Galathea 3 expedition concluded their scientific study in U.S. Virgin Islands waters on Monday with presentations at the University of the Virgin Islands' McClean Marine Science Center. Scientists Antoon Kuijpers, Rudolf Endler and Joern Bo Jensen made presentations on global climate change, the search for evidence of major coastal inundations in the past and the scientific techniques and instrumentation used to explore the ocean floor for such evidence. Constitution 2008 Press Conference to Detail Qualifications for Delegates
V.I. residents interested in qualifying to be delegates to the Virgin Islands Constitutional Convention may obtain petitions to support their candidacy from any Board of Elections office, beginning April 2, 2007.
The process for completing the petitions and the conduct of the special election scheduled for June 12, 2007 will be the subject of a press conference to be held jointly by the University of the Virgin Islands and the Virgin Islands Board of Elections at 10 a.m. on April 2, 2007, in the VIP Room of UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. Student Employee Appreciation Week Scheduled April 8-14 on St. Thomas
April 8 to 14 has been designated Student Employment Appreciation Week on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Included will be workshops for students and supervisors and the annual Student Awards Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, in the Dining Pavilion. Nominations for Student Employee of the Year and Lighter Side Awards must be received no later than Monday, April 2. 'Lunch-N-Learn' Sessions to Cover Stress and Hypertension
During the month of April, Damali Johnson-Harrigan, a senior nursing student on UVI's St. Thomas campus, will present "Lunch-N-Learn" sessions covering stress management and hypertension. The sessions, which are open to UVI students, faculty and staff, will be held in the Nursing Education Building Conference Room 206. Session I – on stress management – is scheduled for noon on Monday, April 9. Session II – on hypertension – is slated for noon on Wednesday, April 11. A light snack will be served. Rock Lounge Session Set April 13 at Frenchtown Deli
A session of the Rock Lounge – an open mic experience of spoken word, music and the visual arts – is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 13, at the Frenchtown Deli. Woodworkers Organizational Meeting Set April 15 on St. Thomas and St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor an organizational meeting for woodworkers on St. Thomas/St. John and St. Croix. The meeting will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, in Teacher Education room 115 on the St. Thomas campus, with a video-conference link to Evans Center room 802 on the St. Croix campus. The Caribbean Writer Sponsors Poetry Contest
The 1st annual The Caribbean Writer Humanities Festival poetry writing contest is currently accepting poems on the theme "Caribbean Creations: Virgin Islands Arts and Culture." The competition is an open contest, and writers can submit up to two poems of any length to be judged by The Caribbean Writer's editorial board. First and second place winners will receive small cash prizes. Their poems will be considered for inclusion in The Caribbean Writer – Volume 21 to be published later this year. April 10 is the deadline for submissions. Submissions must clearly indicate that they are for the Humanities Festival contest, and they should be addressed to The Caribbean Writer, University of the Virgin Islands, RR 1, Box 10,000, Kingshill, St. Croix, USVI 00850 or sent via email to submit@TheCaribbeanWriter.com. Seminar on ADA Compliance for Small Businesses set April 5
A seminar on small business compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, at the UVI Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Presenter Wilbert Francis will cover the basic requirements for businesses to be in compliance with the ADA. Admission is $20 at the door. UVI students, staff and faculty with proper identification who pre-register will be admitted free. FBLA Collects for March of Dimes
St. Thomas campus student members of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) – Phi Beta Lambda chapter raised $1,296 for th
e March of Dimes health charity. During the week of March 18, the students used baby bottles to solicit contributions for the non-profit organization that works to prevent premature births. For details, contact Aurelia Donald at 693-1316.
Danger Zone Wins Intramural Basketball Title on St. Croix
Top seed Danger Zone, lead by David Garcia's 23 points, held off second seed Gun-Dem-Man, 53-47, to capture the St. Croix Campus Spring 2007 Intramural Basketball Title on March 26. Also contributing for Danger Zone were Joseph Lestrade, with 16 points, Jamal Soldiew, with 11 points, team captain Bernhardt Simmonds, with three points, and Shaka James, Scott Cave and Jameel Yacub. Nemecio Camacho led Gun-Dem-Man with 11 points. He was followed by Dwayne Nesbitt, Clint Williams, Richard Brown and Dennis Lynch, all with eight points, Rod Joseph, with two points, and Glen Rogers. Fifty-seven students on five teams participated in this most competitive intramural basketball league ever according to Coordinator Bruce Wray.
