Robert S. Mathes, Commissioner Designee of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) is reminding owners and operators of wells located within or near the Tutu Wellfield site that they should NOT be pumping their wells.
In 1987, it was discovered that the Tutu Wellfield site had been contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently conducting groundwater remediation activities at the site to mitigate the plume of contamination.
Please be advised that until groundwater remediation activities at the site are completed, health risks associated with the dermal contact, ingestion, or inhalation of the potentially contaminated groundwater continue to exist. Alternative supplies of water are provided by the EPA via trucked water to all impacted well owners.
DPNR and the EPA are committed to ensuring the protection of human health and safety, and will continue to update the public on the progress of site remediation activities.
