Virgin Islands Cycling Federation Results Given

March 20, 2007 – When the cat's away…with St. Croix stud Robert Bumann off racing in South Africa, the rest of the local cyclists had a chance for a rare victory on Sunday. Bumann's go from the gun style has made traditional tactics evaporate into a haze of oxygen-debt induced fatigue.
The 40-mile South Shore Road Race started at Junies Restaurant near Peters Rest, traveled east down the South Shore Road, where it intersected the twice circled East End loop, and returned to Ha' Penny Beach. The course offers multiple opportunities for attacks, but the mood was decidedly more conservative, as no-one wanted to risk defeat on an all or nothing venture. Team tactics played a large role, as both STX 340 and Twin Cities attempted to set up their best sprinters for the dash at the end. Glenn Massiah of STX 340 nipped Paul Trivino of Twin Cities by half a bike length to capture his first road win. STX 340 rider Danney Fontenelle was two feet back in third.
The 27-mile Expert category race was something else entirely. Twin Cities teammates Alex Betancourt, Emmanuel Maldonado and Jason Snow cruised across the finish line together to cement an impressive team performance.
The 14-mile Sport race saw the return of Luke Defour, who nipped Luis Cruz and Mathias Sampson, to take his first win of the year.
Heidi Snow dominated the women as she got away at the start and rode alone to an easy win in the 14-mile race. Denise Blanchette and Cheryl Wade rounded out the top three.
The next event on the calendar is the Chrysler – Dodge – Jeep West is Best Triathlon, which will be held at Coconuts in Frederiksted on April 1.
