March 15, 2007 — In an effort to address the problems besetting the territory’s school system, the St. Croix Foundation and the V.I. Department of Education will host an all-day symposium featuring internationally renowned educational leader William Daggett this Wednesday at the Divi Carina Bay resort.
Building upon an ongoing commitment to support and encourage systemic change, the event will bring together public school principals, Department of Education administrators, legislators, Board of Education members, UVI representatives, corporate citizens and community leaders.
Daggett is president of the International Center for Leadership in Education and is recognized worldwide for his proven ability to move education systems towards more relevant student curriculums.
He's also assisted a number of states and hundreds of school districts with their school improvement initiatives, many in response to No Child Left Behind and its demanding adequate yearly progress provisions.
According to the center's website, Daggett "forces his listeners to look at education differently by challenging their assumptions about the purposes, benefits and effectiveness of American schools."
Established in 1990, the foundation is billing the symposium as a “groundbreaking event” that seeks to initiate an honest and informed dialogue about why change is needed in the educational system and how to implement those changes.
Deanna James, the foundation's chief operations officer, said, “Daggett’s visit represents a valuable opportunity for community engagement and collaboration and serves to encourage a collective vision for how we as territory can transform our public education system together.”
This symposium is the first in several joint ventures within the public and private sectors and is part of the foundation’s "Comprehensive Educational Initiative," the first phase of which was launched in 2005. The initiative seeks to develop a strategic and collaborative approach towards transforming our local schools.
On its website, the foundation states that it is a “nonpartisan, nonpolitical community foundation that provides leadership and acts as a catalyst in bringing together diverse groups to discuss problems and forge solutions.”
Due to limited seating, the symposium is not open to the public.
