March 9, 2007 — Claudio Enterprise, undeniably the hottest team in the Bob Owens Slow pitch softball league, clobbered the National Guard Hummers, 14 -4, in a mercy-ruled five-inning contest Thursday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park in Christiansted.
The Enterprise ended their regular season on a six-game win streak and will be a formidable opponent going into the playoffs.
Right off the bat (no pun intended), Claudio Enterprises took control of the game by hitting around in the first inning to score 11 runs.
Claudio tallied their runs on solo homers by Julio Carmona, Antonio Cruz and Luis Moreno; two-run homers by Cruz and Alberto Medina; a three-run blast by Juan Santana; and an RBI single by Miguel Rodriguez.
Meanwhile Claudio ace Carmona was really on his game. He held a not-too-shabby Hummers lineup scoreless through the first four innings by hitting his spots on both sides of the plate.
Claudio added one more run in the top of the second on an RBI double by Wilfredo Ferraras to extend their lead to 12-0.
After a scoreless third, Claudio completed their scoring in the top of the fourth, coming up with two runs on an RBI single off the bat of Leandro Reyes for a 14-0 lead.
After Claudio failed to score in the top of the fifth, the Hummers finally showed some life, plating four runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run home run by Wayne Ross and an error by Claudios second base man, but it was too little too late and the game was called.
Carmona got the win for Claudio, while Leonard Frett suffered the loss for the Hummers. Leading the Claudio Enterprise attack at the plate were Cruz (3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs), Santana (2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs) and Moreno (3-for-3 with a home run and one RBI). For the Hummers, Ross was 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.
Wyatt Heat 16, Anchor Dive 15
In the night's other contest, league-leading Wyatt Heat finished their regular season on a winning note by edging Anchor Dive 16-15. The Heat, who claimed the regular season championship with the win, will enter the playoffs as the No. 1-seeded team.
David Oetken, the Heats star pitcher, returned after a short layoff to pick up the win, while Allan Woods took the loss for Anchor Dive.
The Heats hitting attack were led by Steven Rosario (3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs), Dexter DeSouza (3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs), and Andre Ponce (3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs).
Providing the power for Anchor Dive were Carmelo Torres (3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs), Joe Phillip (1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs) and Danny Rosa (2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs).
