Local Triathlon Season Begins With March 4 Results

March 6, 2007 – Wind, waves and hills greeted local triathletes as the Hyundai East End Sprint and Try-a-Tri kicked off the 2007 triathlon season. The conditions offered anything but a gentle welcome back as the athletes struggled through the .5-mile swim, 13-mile bike and 3-mile run.
A strong high-pressure area had kicked up the wind for three days before the race, and the two-knot current had swimmers sliding as far sideways as forward. The already hilly difficult east end bike loop of St. Croix had riders struggling to get up Grassy Point, the final climb of the route. The run course featured three steep hills in each direction and is tough even on a calm day.
Powering through the race were winners Jason Snow and Theresa Harper. Snow's time of 1:21:44 was two minutes faster than runner-up Chuck Hamel. Harper easily won the distaff side, finishing over five minutes ahead of Erica Sweitzer.
Two students from Country Day School won the Try-a-Tri, which is a short 440-yard swim, 6-mile bike and 1.5-mile run and acts as an introduction to the sport. Will Peil and Samantha Smith were both impressive in capturing the first wins of their young careers.
