UVI Will Have 'Afternoon on the Green' Food Fest

Feb. 28, 2007 – The University of the Virgin Islands will have its annual food, family, and fun event, Afternoon on the Green, starting at noon, on Sunday, March 4, at UVI's Herman E. Moore Golf Course. Some of the territory's best cooks will have their food on sale for $2 a taste. Dishes such as "Brigo's firehouse salmon" by Arthur Raymo III, piononos deamarillo by Joyce Harrigan, seafood kallaloo by Lesmore Howard, "Eli potato stuffing" by Elita Bradshaw and frozen fruit drinks by Tinekqua Christian will be offered, as well as burgers, hotdogs and beef ribs off the grill.
While food is the main attraction, this year will also feature candy and ice- cream making demonstrations, storytelling, kids' corner and jump rope competitions. Spectrum Band will provide entertainment. There will also be display tables from the UVI academic divisions and student recruitment officers will be on hand to collect student applications. The storytelling sessions will be held at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The ice-cream making demonstration begins at 2 p.m. and will be followed at 3 p.m. with the candy-making demonstration.
This year's theme is "It's Celebration Time, Afternoon on the Green has Officially Turned 18." While Afternoon on the Green is celebrating its 18th anniversary, UVI will be celebrating its 45th anniversary. Afternoon on the Green participants will be asked to join UVI faculty and staff to form a 45 across the golf course where a photographer in a helicopter will take an aerial picture. All the money raised will go towards UVI scholarship funds.
Because of the event, no golfing will be allowed on the course from Friday, March 2 to Monday, March 5. Food is the key for Afternoon on the Green and more cooks are needed. To donate an item call the UVI Institutional Advancement Office at 693-1040 and contribute your family's favorite dish.
