Guidance Charges Into Finals with 33-27 Win Over the Tribe

Feb. 24, 2007 — Playing with only a five-man roster, Guidance managed to pull out a 33-27 win over the Tribe Friday to move into the finals of the Tim Duncan Division against the Lakers.
Leading the best-of-three series 1-0 going into Friday night's game, Guidance won in the semifinals of the Ronald Charles Basketball Association at the St. Croix Central High School gymnasium. The day's games included two in the 13-15 division and one in the 11-12 division.
After both teams netted seven points apiece in the first quarter, Guidance outscored the Tribe 9-7 in the second quarter to go into the locker room with a two-point lead at 16-14.
A huge nine-point performance by the Tribe’s Thomas Wyatt enabled his team to outscore Guidance 9-6 in the third and grab a 25-22 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The game really changed in the fourth quarter, when the Tribe's coach tried to give his starters a breather so they could be fresh for the final minutes. Guidance took full advantage of playing against the second stringers, however, and rallied to retake the lead at 26-25. They would never trail again.
Even when the front-line players for the tribe returned to the game, they could do little to stop the Guidance momentum. Riding the hot hand of Dodson James and Jemille Vialet, who had six and five points respectively in the final period, Guidance outscored the Tribe 11-2 to pull out the win.
James led Guidance scoring with 15 points, while Jemille Vialet chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. For the Tribe, Thomas Wyatt finished with a game-high 17 points. No other Tribe player scored more than three points.
Mo Fire 51, Eastsiders 48
The other 13-15 game played in the Roger Bell Division saw Mo Fire even their best-of-three series against the Eastsiders at one game apiece with a 51-48 nail biter that went down to the final seconds.
The Eastsiders had one final chance to send the game into overtime with five seconds left in the game, but the desperation shot by Walleem Felix came up well short. Devante Xavier led all scorers with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds, and Elijah Brooks chipped in with 12. For the Eastsiders, Shakeel Newton finished with 15 points and Michael Flemming finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Boyz Dem 34, Lakers 21
The day’s early game in the 10-12 division pitted Boyz Dem against the Lakers, and Boyz Dem came out on top 34-21.
Edward Peter and Katron Henry each had eight points for Boyz Dem, while Rasheed Swanston and Ajani Dowdy finished with seven points each. Swanstson also had seven boards and three steals. For the Lakers, Shamal James netted eight points with seven rebounds and Razeem Huggins finished with seven points while grabbing eight rebounds.
