Triathlon Season Begins on March 4

Feb. 21, 2007 – The local triathlon season begins next Sunday, March 4, with the Hyundai East End Sprint and Try-A-Tri Triathlons. The races will be held at Divi Carina Bay Resort and will take place on the east end of St. Croix.
The event is really two races in one. The East End Sprint is a great way for athletes to test their early season fitness, with a .5-mile swim, 13-mile counterclockwise (changed from last year's clockwise loop) tour of the East End Road, and a 3-mile run. There will also be a team competition.
The second event is the Try-A-Tri, which introduces beginner adults and 12-year-old and older children to the great sport of triathlon. The course is designed to be short and enjoyable, and anyone should be able to complete it successfully. The distances will be a 400-yard swim, 6-mile bike and 1.5-mile run. Helmets are required for all participants.
All entrants will receive an official race T-shirt and breakfast buffet.
Applications can be filled out at Endurance Sports or downloaded from www.stcroixtriathlon.com and brought to the race site. Registration will be open from 6-6:45 a.m., and the race will start at 7 a.m. Volunteers are also needed to help kayak.
