Feb. 19, 2007 — Leah DeWilde and Andy Feldman emerged as double winners in the first HOVENSA/VITA Junior Tennis Tournament Series event held at the Tennis Club of St. Croix, according to a V.I. Tennis Association news release.
DeWilde, playing in the girls' 14 and 16 age groups, and Feldman, playing in the boys' 14 and 16 age groups, won their respective titles. DeWilde beat Madeleine Duggan 7-6 and 6-1 in the 14s and beat Madeleine again in the 16s in a tough 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 final. Meanwhile, Feldman won both the boys' 14 and 16 round-robin events while never losing a set.
Bill Byrd finished second in both boys' 14 and 16, while David Emmanuel finished third in the 14s and Anjay Monnel finished third in the 16s.
In other action, Devon Locke beat Eric Emmanuel 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 to win the boys' 18. Lorhra Emmanuel won the girls' 12 round-robin, with Hanna Shuck finishing second and Bridget Ousley taking third. Danny Kenses won the boys' 12 over Jack Duggan 6-3, 6-1 in the finals. Francesa Pastore beat Emma Logan 8-5 in the girls' 10 final. Alex Kenses won the boys' 10 round-robin, with Jack Duggan second and Webster Bozo third.
The association will use the results of all HOVENSA/VITA Junior Tournament Series events to rank junior players for possible selection to VITA's National Junior Team for international competition over the summer months. All junior tennis players are strongly encouraged to participate in the junior tennis series.
The next junior tennis tournament in the HOVENSA/VITA Series will be held at the St. Thomas Racquet Club in Sub Base on March 9-11. For more information on the series, contact VITA Tennis Coordinator Bruce Wray at 692-4139.
