The Tragic Accident in Coral Bay

Dear Source:
It feels like anyone who didn't get the opportunity to know this young, wonderful woman should realize what a loss she is to us in Coral Bay. Katie Hewsen was the kind of person who belonged on our island…she was warm, friendly, kind, a hard-worker, responsible, funny, always smiling and an absolute pleasure to be around. Everyone was happy to see she had returned a second season at Aqua Bistro. Now we are mourning a young woman whose life ended too quickly in an awful, seemingly senseless tragedy.
There are some things in life that we can never understand and this is one of them. Perhaps, what we need to do is find some kind of good to make out of this painful experience in order to honor Katie's wonderful spirit. Let's all remind newcomers to always put their vehicles in gear, use the safety brake and never try to catch a rolling vehicle. Those who were at the scene and assessed the accident think that perhaps she attempted to run away from the Suzuki; however, tragically, it gathered speed too quickly, and the wheel may have turned and aimed the jeep where she ran. Her co-worker and friend, Dave D'Alberto, was able to comfort her and hold her hand until the ambulance arrived.
There are a lot of deeply sad people in Coral Bay. Maybe we can channel this sadness and grief in working together at getting our 911-dispatch working efficiently for our Coral Bay community's emergency needs. Let's do it in memory of this fine young woman. The Coral Bay community expresses its deepest condolences to her family in Massachusetts and her loving friends on St. John.
Katie's wake will be this Friday, Feb. 16, at Miles Funeral Home in Sterling, Mass. Her mother has asked that instead of sending flowers that donations are made to the American Red Cross in Katie's name. The address of the funeral home is: Miles Funeral Home, Rural Route 12, Sterling, Mass. 01564. Phone: (978) 422-0100 or contact them at www.milesfuneralhome.com. There will be a celebration of Katie's life on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the First Church, in Sterling, Mass. If anyone would like to send a card to Katie's family, her mother's address is: Denise Hewsen, 1 Lucus Road, Sterling, Mass. 01564.
Her Aqua Bistro family will announce a future time for a gathering of friends to celebrate her beautiful spirit and profound goodness. God bless you Katie, and thank you for blessing us–with you.
