St. Croix Teacher Receives Presidential Award

Feb. 8, 2007 – Ricardo Richards Elementary School has announced that Helena Stevens has been selected as the Outside North America Regional Winner of the 2007 International Reading Association's (IRA) Presidential Award for Reading and Technology. The award is sponsored by IRA in partnership with PLATO Learning, an educational software company.
The IRA Presidential Award is an annual award designed to honor educators in grades K – 12 who are making outstanding and innovative contributions to the use of technology in reading education. IRA and PLATO Learning are organizations that are committed to reading education. Stevens' project, titled "Reading to Preserve Our History: In More Ways Than One," involved the integration of reading and writing with the use of technologies such as digital cameras, digital video cameras and video production.
Winners come from seven U.S. regions, with a winner in Canada. The winners will be announced at the 52nd annual IRA convention awards banquet to be held in Toronto, May 13-17.
