Elderly Woman Dies in Front of Sub Base Bakery

Feb. 1, 2007 –- An elderly woman died late Thursday morning in front of Frank's Bake Shop in Sub Base. Bakery owner Mike Veraart said, "The woman, an elderly Hispanic lady, came up to the front stoop, and she calmly turned around and sat down, obviously not feeling well. She then lay down. We called the ambulance right away, as we had noticed her from inside the shop.
"Once she lay down," Veraart said, "she was not responsive. We stayed with her and some customers tried to help her, to shade her from the sun. Some people there said she had suffered from heart problems."
Veraart continued: "The ambulance came and the police and someone from the fire department came. She must have died of natural causes."
Clearly, still upset, he said, "It's very sad this happened. She, obviously, knew she was not well. There was no way we could have helped her. She was so gentle when she walked up to the front stoop. I'm very sad about this."
Calls to the V.I. Police Department for further information were not returned by press time.
