FirstBank Offers Help with Government Payroll Glitch

Oct. 12, 2006 – A glitch in the electronic processing for government direct deposit payroll left banks that receive the payroll deposit without the required money Thursday morning.
Finance Commissioner Bernice Turnbull called the radio stations early in the morning to tell government employees not to panic the money would be available.
"The government has more than enough money to cover this payroll."
At 2:58 p.m. Government House sent a release saying that "direct deposit for all banks other than FirstBank, Bank of Nova Scotia and Virgin Islands Community Bank have been posted."
In the release Turnbull is quoted as saying, "This issue is not a result" of those banks failure to do something. However, Banco Popular, which is the host bank, has informed the government that the direct deposit file was received from the government." Turnbull said Banco Popular could not get to the bottom of the problem because of a holiday in Puerto Rico.
Meanwhile, one bank has said it will honor payroll for their customers with direct deposit accounts.
"FirstBank has instituted a contingency plan to accommodate the current government payroll situation," a release from the bank said.
All FirstBank clients who have direct deposit for their government payroll may withdraw monies today by:
presenting their pay stub for the current payroll;
with a personal check or withdrawal slip
and one form of picture ID
Withdrawals will be permitted from individuals' accounts up to the amount of their current available balance plus the amount of salary printed upon their pay stub.
"The delay in crediting the government payroll did not originate with FirstBank."
