Oct. 11, 2006 — St. John residents will have a chance to find out how the candidates in the upcoming election feel about St. John issues during upcoming candidates forums October 25 and 26.
Those running for governor and lieutenant governor will have their turn in front of the people Oct. 25.
Senatorial candidates, including those running for the at-large post, will answer residents' questions Oct. 26.
Both events, sponsored by the St. John Community Foundation, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Westin Resort and Villas.
Community Foundation Director Carole deSenne said the organization invited the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor to appear on the same day to see how they work together.
DeSenne said that St. John residents should also be interested in seeing who among the gubernatorial and senatorial candidates shows up.
"Except for deJongh, we haven't seen many of their faces around," she said, referring to gubernatorial candidate John deJongh.
She said that the events are an important part of the election process because St. John issues get short shrift in debates held on other islands.
DeSenne asked that residents submit possible questions by Oct. 20. Residents may submit as many questions as they like. Questions can refer to anything residents think are important.
She said the questions should begin: "If you are elected governor/lieutenant governor/senator, how would you use your office to …."
The candidates will have an opportunity to make an opening statement and will then answer between seven and 10 questions, depending on time. They will also have a chance to make a closing statement.
