June 15, 2006 — Labor Commissioner Cecil Benjamin has announced that the Department of Labor offices on St. Thomas will reopen Friday at 8 a.m.
The offices on St. Thomas were evacuated Wednesday after a Labor employee received an envelope containing a "foul-smelling" unidentified substance. According to Shawna Richards, public relations manager for the Police Department, preliminary police reports indicate that the incident may have occurred sometime before noon, after the employee received an "envelope or package addressed from one of the local jails."
"The unfortunate incidents that led to the offices closing on Wednesday and Thursday
was one that resulted in the department taking a proactive stance. This was a precautionary measure that was taken in the best interest of the employees and the public we serve," Benjamin stated.
All employees are to report to work Friday morning for regular business hours.
