June 1, 2006 – Virgin Islands National Park announced that the park would host a Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Program this summer. The YCC Program provides an opportunity for youths to be employed for an eight-week period, while gaining an understanding and appreciation about conservation, according to a press release from the National Park Service.
The program will employ six to eight youths this year, who will be involved in a variety of duties associated with park operations. The eight-week program will begin on June 28 and end on August 20. Superintendent Frederick said, "We are pleased that the park was able to secure funding for the 2006 YCC Program and I am hopeful that next year the Park Service will again grant the park funding. This is an extremely important program to the St. John community and the park is excited about having the opportunity to provide our teenagers with a work experience that will enhance their understanding and appreciation for the environment in which they live."
Applicants must be 15 to 18 years of age, be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency status. Those interested can pick up an application at the National Park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They must be completed and received by the park service no later than June 15.
