May 17, 2006 – The American Legion of St. John, Viggo E. Sewer Post 131, is sponsoring a youth co-ed flag football league for children ages 9 through 14.
League coordinator Paul Devine said, "Sports are always a fun way to keep children active, and flag football certainly is a terrific team sport that both girls and boys can participate in. The game itself is fun, safe and exciting."
The new league is asking parents from across St. John and St. Thomas to register their children for this fun, safe, summer sports experience.
Additionally, the league is soliciting volunteers to coach, referee and help with general activities.
The league is hoping for 100 players or more.
Teams will be divided into three brackets: children ages 9 through 11 (co-ed); and separate brackets for boys and girls, ages 12 through 14.
The league will provide equipment and jerseys. The cost per child is $10.
Additionally, the league is looking for businesses to sponsor teams.
Devine said, "The American Legion
is proud to be able to sponsor this new league as we feel the children of St John need a summer outlet. As we started organizing, we found that many parents want and need an outlet for their children since the limited number of camps fills up very fast."
Devine noted that Legion members and league organizers have been meeting once a week to hammer out the details and hope to get everything going by the first week in July.
Registration forms will be available for players, coaches, referees and volunteers at Connections and Connections East, Keep Me Posted in Coral Bay, Nature's Fruit Stand in Cruz Bay, and St. John Hardware at the Marketplace.
