Education Asks Citizens to Celebrate V.I. Pride

March 23, 2006 – The Virgin Islands Education Department encourages the V.I. community to embrace the character education themes of respect, charity and cleanliness during V.I. History Month. The theme this year is "Virgin Islands Pride – Keep It Alive."
During the week of March 19 through 31, Transfer Day, the social studies department asks that all citizens show community pride by flying the V.I. flag in a prominent place, read a book about the Virgin Islands or by a V.I. author and reinforce your knowledge of the territory.
The department has cooperated with the WAPA to post flags along the highways in observance of the occasion, according to a press release from the Education Department.
Gov. Charles Turnbull issued an executive order to create the annual observance in 2005 and said at the time, "The people, natives, inhabitants, citizens and residents of the United States Virgin Islands of various origins, backgrounds, races ethnicities, colors, faiths, beliefs, and religions have throughout history, as individuals and as groups, greatly contributed to the progress and enrichment of humanity locally, regionally, nationally, internationally and globally to a degree out of proportion to the population and geographical size of the V.I. It is most fitting, proper and appropriate that knowledge of these achievements and contributions to humankind be known both to Virgin islanders and all others in the global community."
