Energy Office Announces New Rebate Program

Jan. 19, 2006 – If you've been holding off buying an energy-efficient appliance, solar panels, or water heater in hopes that the V.I. Energy Office would offer another rebate program, you're in luck.
The Energy Office announced its latest program Thursday. It runs until May 31, giving you more than four months to make up your mind on what model you'd like.
"We want people to take an active part in energy conservation and look toward renewable energy as a major source of meeting energy needs," program monitor Leila Muller said Thursday.
In order to take advantage of the rebate, you must shop at dealers who have agreed to participate in the program.
When it comes to buying appliances, they must carry the Energy Star logo signifying that they're energy efficient. Buyers will get 20 percent off the price of air conditioners, ceiling fans, clothes washers, and refrigerators.
If you buy compact fluorescent light bulbs that carry the Energy Star designation, you'll get a $5 coupon good toward the purchase of three bulbs.
Participating dealers for appliances and compact fluorescent light bulbs are Best Furniture and Appliances, Gallows Bay Hardware, Oscar Refrigeration and Furniture Center, and Quality Electric Supply, all on St. Croix. St. Thomas dealers are Bryan's Electrical Contracting, Quantum and Virgin Enterprises.
Rebates vary for other items.
You'll get $3.50 per watt back on photovoltaic panels, up to a limit of one kilowatt.
Rebates on solar hot water heaters vary depending on size. Buy one with 81 to 120 gallons for a $1,000 rebate. A heater holding 40 to 80 gallons gets you a $700 rebate. One with less than 39 gallons has a rebate of $500.
You'll get 20 percent off the price of a wind turbine generator.
If you buy solar panels or a wind turbine generator, you'll be eligible for 15 percent off the cost of a sine wave inverter.
And you'll get 25 percent off the cost of an electric water heater timer.
For these items, the Energy Office lined up one dealer on St. Croix and four on St. Thomas. You must shop at West Indies Solair on St. Croix or Altona Trading and Sales, Pools "R" Weeeee, Quantum, or Virgin Energies on St. Thomas.
Muller said that shoppers will get their rebates for compact fluorescent light bulb and electric water heater timers when they make the purchase.
For all other items, buyers must get an application form from the dealer. She said the dealer fills out one part. The buyer then fills out the rest of the form. Mail it to the V.I. Energy Office, No. 45 Estate Mars Hill, Frederiksted, St. Croix, VI 00840.
