UVI Little Theatre Fall Production of 'Seven Guitars' Concludes Today
"Seven Guitars," the fall production at UVI's Little Theatre, concludes its four-day run today, with an 8 p.m. show. The August Wilson play is staged in the UVI Little Theatre on the second floor of the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets are on sale at Dockside Bookstore, Modern Music (Nisky Center), UVI Bookstore and the UVI Humanities Building on the St. Thomas campus. Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for general admission. For further information call 693-1340.
UVI Men Take Bronze Medals in ODI Championships; Team Awards Announced
Congratulations to UVI's tennis duo of Alex Dennis and David Hartzell. The pair won third place and bronze medals in both singles and doubles competition in the past weekend's ODI Tennis Championships. The championships were hosted by UVI at the Buccaneer Hotel Tennis Club on St. Croix. University of Puerto Rico Politecnica won the tournament with 259 points. UPR-Ponce was second with 224 points. UVI scored 158 points. Heather Adzor was UVI's top woman finisher, taking fourth place in the second-racket, singles competition of the championships. UVI did not qualify for the women's team competition.
UVI 2005 tennis awards, announced following the recent ODI Championships, were as follows:
+ Most Outstanding Players — Marelle Sylvester and Alex Dennis
+ Most Improved — David Hartzell and Heather Addor
+ Coach's Awards — Carl Christopher and Nicole Orr
+ Other team members are: Michael Nissman and Leona Hendrickson.
Caribbean Music, One of New Classes in UVI Music Area
The University of the Virgin Islands Humanities and Social Sciences Division has announced three new classes in the Music Area on the St. Thomas campus. They are Jazz History, World Music and Survey of Caribbean Music. A news release is available on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu.
Golden Key Food Drive Scheduled for November on St. Thomas Campus
The Golden Key International Honour Society on UVI's St. Thomas campus is conducting a food drive during November. Donation boxes are available at strategic locations around campus and in various academic departments, including Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Math and Science. Donated food items will be distributed to Nana Baby Home Inc., Bethlehem House, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army and St. Andrews Soup Kitchen.
Community Invited to Discussion on Hip Hop Culture Nov. 15 at Little Theatre
The Humanities Senior Seminar class on UVI's St. Thomas campus will conduct a symposium entitled "Mic Check: A Discussion on Hip Hop Culture," from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the UVI Little Theatre. Symposium Participants include: Miniminyha deMund, Sylvanie Frett, Samantha Harlow, Monyka Johnigan, Shanica Maduro, Mayleen Neaves, Ryan Skinner and Michadia Viera. Freshman Expose Scheduled Nov. 16 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Freshman Center on the St. Thomas campus will sponsor a Freshman Expose from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Dining Pavilion. This event will showcase freshmen in song, rap, dance, pantomime and drama. The UVI community is invited. For details contact Vivian G. Bailey at 693-1226.
University Lecture Series Schedules Third Installment on St. Croix on Nov. 16
The third installment of the University Lecture Series on UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Speakers will address the topic of what characteristics and values a village must possess to nurture its youth. Presenters will include: Terrence Joseph, superintendent for the Department of Education; Attorney Harold Willocks, Chief Public Defender; May Adams Cornwall, PTSA president at the Educational Complex; and Reginald Perry, pastor of Victorious Believers Church. UVI faculty, students and the general public are invited to attend and pose questions to the panelists. The series is sponsored by Generation Now! SBDC Seminar on Personal Budgeting Scheduled for Nov. 16
A seminar titled "How to Develop and Manage an Effective Budget" is scheduled by UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter will be Daryl Edwards, an SBDC business counselor. The seminar will emphasize personal and household budgeting. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $20. Open House for High School Seniors Set Nov. 17 on UVI's St. Croix Campus
The UVI Office of Admissions will conduct an open house for college-bound high school seniors on the University's St. Croix campus on Thursday, Nov. 17. Open house activities, which will include campus tours, will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interested individuals should call Charmaine Smith at 692-4070 to indicate their intention to participate.
Municipal Government for V.I. is Subject for Nov. 17 Debate
A debate on the topic "Municipal Government for the Virgin Islands," is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, in room 302 of the Classroom Administration Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The debate is co-sponsored by the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office and the UVI Debating Society. For more information, call 693-1110.
Nov. 18 Colloquium to Feature Dr. Lorna Young-Wright and Detra Davis
A Humanities and Social Sciences Colloquium featuring composer-pianist Dr. Lorna Young-Wright and soprano-soloist Detra Davis is scheduled for 1:30 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18. The program piece, titled "Moments," will be performed in Music Building room 201 on UVI's St. Thomas campus. All UVI faculty, staff, students and friends are invited. Science and Math to Introduce Starlab to St. Thomas on Nov. 19
Following a successful introduction to St. Croix, UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics moves its new Starlab mobile planetarium to the St. Thomas campus for scheduled school groups and a public access day on Saturday, Nov. 19. A release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
St. Thomas/St. John Ag Fair Scheduled Nov. 19-20 on Reichhold Grounds
The 2005 St. Thomas/St. John Ag Fair is scheduled for Nov. 19 and 20 on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. UVI's ROTC Program to Sponsor St. Croix Coast Cleanup on Nov. 19
UVI's Army ROTC program has invited the St. Croix public and the UVI community to participate in an International Coasts Cleanup event from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 19, at the Lagoon in Christiansted (beginning near the small bridge). Participants will be supplied with sun screen, drinking water, gloves and collection bags. They should dress appropriately for shoreline cleanup activities. Student Music Recital Scheduled on Nov. 20 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Music Education Degree Program will present a student recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, in the Music building on the St. Thomas c
ampus. The recital will showcase the talent of music majors and others enjoying the benefits of music education. The UVI community is invited to join the students for an afternoon of music.
UVI Concert Band to Present First Christmas Concert on St. Croix
For the first time ever the University of the Virgin Islands Concert Band will perform a Christmas Concert on St. Croix. The 18-member band and its director Prof. Austin A. UVI MBA Comprehensive Exam Rescheduled for Dec. 9
UVI's MBA Comprehensive Exam, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18, has been rescheduled for Friday, Dec. 9. The exam will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room 222 of the Sports and Fitness Center on St.Thomas and in the Research Extension Building room 139 on the St.Croix campus.
