Frederiksted Site for MTV Party

Oct. 27, 2005 – Not many cruise ship passengers have had the chance to appreciate the almost $2 million dollar renovation that has been done to Frederiksted waterfront, but over 5,000 St. Croix residents were able to Thursday night.
Rupert Ross, of the Frederiksted Economic Development Association, and John Abramson, supervisor of the V.I. Board of Elections were sitting in Pier 69 Restaurant in Frederiksted Thursday night saying how well everything was going.
They are both Rotarians and a Rotary function was going on in the restaurant, but outside was where most of the action was taking place.
The Ann E. Abramson pier was the site of one of the launch concerts for MTV's newest channel, Tempo, which features everything Caribbean.
Everyone on St. Croix seemed to be at the event. Sen. Terrence "Positive" Nelson arrived a couple hours after the event started. At that time organizers were very particular who they let in the gates to the pier and there was a constant crush. Nelson said he did not have a VIP ticket and was going to rely on his smile to get him in. Sure enough just a few minutes later he was seen inside. He said he came to the concert to bring positive vibes.
Sens. Ronald Russell and Juan Figueroa-Serville also attended. Russell and his wife were doing a little music appreciation. Figueroa-Serville was shaking hands.
Thomas Hannah of the V.I. Police Department was also there. He said the event appeared to be going very well.
"Everyone is just having a good time," he said.
However, everyone was not completely overjoyed with the event. St. Croix resident Fernando Webster Jr. said he thought the event was poorly planned.
As good as much of the waterfront looked, part of the pier was still a construction site. The construction site was not far from the bandstand limiting the area of good concert viewing to about 2,000 people, although about 5,000 tickets had been issued for the concert.
He also said the way drink tickets were purchased was problematic. He said sellers ran out of tickets and buyers with tickets found the drinks warm. He went to a bar at the end of the pier for his drink.
