Sept. 30, 2005 – As of 6:45 a.m. firefighters had a blaze that had broken out in an abandoned building in downtown Charlotte Amalie under control. Donald Charles, Fire Department spokesman, said, firefighters were still battling a few "hot spots" inside the building, but otherwise the fire was under control.
The fire, which broke out about 5:45 a.m, Charles said, was likely started by a candle or some kind of open flame. He said at 7 a.m. the arson team was on the way to the scene.
Charles said the building, at the foot of Bunker Hill just north of the Bunker Hill grocery store, had been occupied by "vagrants" until just before the fire forced them out of the building.
At 7 a.m. Charles said firefighters had "about 30 minutes worth of work left."
He said traffic into the town might be impeded – especially in the area of All Saints School and the Garden Street and Bunker Hill area.
Two companies, Hotel Company and the Dorothea Company, responded to the blaze.
