Good Hope Junior Recognized by Smith College Club

Sept. 28, 2005 — Sofia Mitchell, a junior at The Good Hope School and the daughter of Mr. B. Mitchell and Ms. M. Bonano of St. Croix, is this year's recipient of the Smith College Book Award in recognition of her academic excellence, leadership, and concern for others. The Smith College Club of St. Croix presented the award.
Smith College, located in Northampton, Mass., is the largest private liberal arts college for women in the United States. A highly selective institution with an undergraduate enrollment of 2,500, Smith has been educating and preparing women for leadership since 1875. Students plan their own academic programs, choosing from 1,000 courses in more than 50 areas of study. Smith's 125-acre campus in New England boasts superb facilities and a student/faculty ration of 10:1. Instead of dormitories, students live in houses that range in size from 17-100 students. Smith recently launched an engineering program, the first of its kind in a women's college in the United States. Smith students come from every state and 60 foreign countries.
This year, Megan Layton, daughter of Richard and Ditty Layton, is attending Smith College.
