UVI Bookstores on Both Campuses to Close for Inventory
The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus will be closed from Sept. 27 through Sept. 30 for inventory. Bookstore Supervisor Mervin Taylor urges UVI employees to submit all outstanding requisitions before the closing date. The UVI Bookstore on the St. Croix campus will be closed from Sept. 26 through Sept. 30 for inventory. Both Bookstores will reopen on Oct. 3. Bucs Set First Volleyball Home Games in Three Years on Oct. 14
UVI will play its first home volleyball games in three years on Friday, Oct. 14, when Polytecnica University and Metropolitan University squads make the trip over to play in the Sports and Fitness Center. The entire University community is urged to support the teams in their home contests. The Lady Bucs will take to the court at 6 p.m., with the men's games to start 15 minutes after the conclusion of the women's match.
First Bank to Host Financial Seminar on St. Thomas/St. Croix Campuses
First Bank Virgin Islands and the University of the Virgin Islands will present the seminar "Financial Footprints to a Firm Foundation," at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Chase Auditorium, room B110, on St. Thomas, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 401 on St. Croix. Students will be taught to create a blueprint for handling cash and managing a checking account, and the wise use of credit. The seminar will be presented by Karen Sprauve, community reinvestment officer of First Bank. For more information call 693-1046.
UVI CLEP Testing Scheduled for Oct. 27; Registration Set Sept. 30
The University of the Virgin Islands has scheduled College Level Examinations Program (CLEP) tests for Oct. 27, 2005. To register for these tests, UVI students should visit the Division of Enrollment Management Office on the second floor of the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus or the Academic Services Office in the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. Registration should take place by Sept. 30. Information on CLEP tests, such as subjects included and credits that can be earned, is available on page 27 of the UVI Catalog.
Young Women Sought for Roundtable Discussion on Leadership
Just In Time Inc., the University of the Virgin Islands and the Office of Delegate Donna Christiansen are looking for 50 young women to participate in a Young Women's Leadership Roundtable scheduled for Nov. 5 on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The young women will share their views with experts in the areas of health, finance, employment, technology, education and social issues. High school seniors and college students are urged to apply. To be considered young women must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and complete an application. 'Turn Your Passion into Profit' at Business Seminars on STT &STX
The New Image Foundation in collaboration with the UVI Small Business Development Center announces the WNET (Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training) Roundtable, "Turn Your Passion into Profit" – Part 2. Attendees will obtain basic information on the paperwork necessary to turn hobbies into legitimate, successful small businesses and learn about business financing options. Representatives from the following offices will be present: Office of the Lieutenant Governor – Division of Corporations and Trademarks, Economic Development Authority – Government Development Bank, Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, and the UVI-Small Business Development Center. The seminars will be held as follows:
— St. Thomas: Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., SBDC Training Facility, Nisky Center Suite 720
— St. Croix: Friday, Sept. 30, from 1 to 3 p.m., SBDC Training Center, Sunshine Mall Suite 104 (Lower Level)

UVI to Sponsor New Tom Joyner TV Show on WVGN
The University of the Virgin Islands will be a sponsor of the new, weekly Tom Joyner TV Show which is scheduled to debut at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1, on WVGN Channel 11, the NBC affiliate in the Virgin Islands. The UVI community is encouraged to watch the new show, which will be broadcast each Saturday at 8 p.m. Joyner's well known radio program in carried locally on KISS-FM 101.3. UVI was selected by Joyner as the featured HBCU of the Month in May of 2002. The promotion is part of an ongoing effort by the Tom Joyner Foundation to raise funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
All Inivited to Join UVI's Beach Clean-up on Oct. 1
The community is invited to join UVI's Beach Clean-up on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at Brewer's Bay Beach. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and shoes, sunscreen, or bring swimwear and snorkel gear (if you have it.) UVI will provide garbage bags, data cards, pencils and drinking water. Science 100 students will receive Campus-Wide Experience credit for participation. Reservations should be made by Thursday, Sept. 29, with Elizabeth Ban of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service at 693-1392, eban@uvi.edu or at the Mac Lean Marine Science Center, room 210. The UVI Clean-up is part of The Ocean Conservancy's 20th annual International Coastal Clean-up and is sponsored by Department of Planning and Natural Resources' Coastal Zone Management Program and the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service.
Miss UVI to Participate in Hall of Fame Campus Queen Competition
The UVI Student Activities Office has announced that Miss UVI Shakima Stoutt will represent the University of the Virgin Islands in the Hall of Fame Campus Queen Competition to be held Oct. 8 in Atlanta, Ga.
St. Thomas Campus Accounting Association Sets Raffle Drawing on Oct. 3
The UVI Accounting Association, St. Thomas Chapter, will hold a raffle drawing on Oct. 3. Tickets are $2 each or $20 per book. Proceeds will be used to support the Accounting Association's participation in the National Association of Black Accountants Student Conference to be held in Atlanta, Ga., from Oct. 5-9, 2005, and other student programs sponsored by the Association. Nursing Institute to Focus on Health Disparities on Oct. 13-14
The UVI Nursing Division will hold an institute – "From Science to Service: A Roadmap for Confronting Health Disparities in the U.S. Virgin Islands" – at Marriott Frenchman's Reef on Oct. 13 and 14. Members of the medical community are invited to participate along with professional researchers and educators in the two-day institute. Registration is $35 for one day and $50 for both days. A continental breakfast and lunch are included. Topics include: cholesterol, HIV, cancer, obesity, hypertension and sexually transmitted diseases. The institute is presented by the Caribbean Export Center for Research and Education in Health Disparities and is funded by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
