St. Croix Foundation Teacher Grant Applications Open

Sept. 17, 2005 – The St. Croix Foundation's Teacher Grant Award program, which gives $200 grants to teachers for interactive student learning experiences, is accepting applications now for the October grant cycle.
In April, the last time the grants were awarded, 12 teachers received $200 each to spend on interactive learning experiences for their students, said Lilli Cox, assistant to the associate executive director. The grant funds were spent on programs studying math and the environment in the real world, purchasing instruments for students and encouraging reading.
"Most of the time they get approved," Cox said, because the funding is usually enough for a project. "There are very few that don't."
Usually ten to 15 grants are awarded, Cox said. The Foundation tries to schedule the application process so grants are given in October and April each year. The program has been in place since 2001, when Kapok Management, Inc. started the program with the St. Croix Foundation. Valance Corp., Inc. is now funding the program.
Grant applications are due Oct. 15, and can be picked up from the St. Croix Foundation, 72 Flag Drive, Gallows Bay. For more information, call the St. Croix Foundation at 773-9898.
