Sewage Flowing Into Salt River Gut on St. Croix

Sept. 16, 2005 – The wet well at the Mon Bijou pump station is overflowing, and, as a result, raw sewage is flowing into the adjacent Salt River Gut.
According to a press release from Dean C. Plaskett, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources; the Division of Environmental Protection has investigated reports of a bypass at the Mon Bijou pump station.
DPNR advises the public to avoid the areas around the overflowing pump station and the Salt River Gut especially children and adults with compromised immune systems. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted areas. For additional information regarding water quality please call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082.
