Sept. 1, 2005 – For Virgin Islanders trying to locate friends or relatives missing in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, here are some websites that might help.
As anyone who was in the Virgin Islands for Hurricanes Hugo or Marilyn might recall, amateur radio operators were often our only way of getting the word out to the outside world.
The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network has a form to complete at www.tsasw.org/qso/healthandwelfare.asp The organization says it will send your inquiry to the disaster area, where it will be relayed to ham radio operators.
A radio station in the region,WYNK, 101.5, has turned its Web site into a resource center that contains dozens of links to assist those looking for missing friends and relatives, as well as those just looking to for a way to help.
Ham radio operators also provide emergency communications for the American Red Cross, which has established a similar "Get Info" hotline: 1-866 GET INFO (1-866-438-4636).
The www.nola.com and www.craigslist.com sites also have missing persons bulletin boards.
The NOLA.com website has up to date information, as does the The Times Picayune newspaper.
