Aug. 24, 2005 — Get ready for Starving Artist Day at Whim Museum in Frederiksted, Sunday, Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This popular and distinctly Crucian activity features craftsmen, cooks and musicians providing an eclectic mix of sounds, flavors and textures. If you're on the lookout for that one-of-a-kind item, searching for unique jewelry, art, clothing or accessories, you can find it all at Starving Artist Day.
The day also features a blend of continental, Crucian and specialty foods for sale. Attendees can enjoy breakfast in the old-fashioned cookhouse with Chef Tahirah from 10 a.m. to noon. Quench your thirst with a wide array of locally-made drinks.
The fair is held twice a year on the early 18th-century grounds and plantation buildings of the Whim Museum. Don't forget to ask for a tour of the great house and grounds.
The purpose of Starving Artists Day is to give local craftsmen a chance to sell their exclusive handiwork. The fair is well known as the best time and place to purchase local paintings, jewelry, hot sauces, handmade pottery, homemade ice cream, ceramics and more.
There will be more than 60 exhibitors, 10 booths with food and drink, and a cash bar featuring Mimosas and Bloody Marys.
A new feature this year is the education tent, where a variety of children's activities will take place. Children can learn about beads and necklaces, make a necklace themselves and then take it home. They can also learn about the fascinating pirates of the Caribbean and take a treasure lamp or pirate flag home with them.
Make sure you visit the museum gift store, which is having its annual summer sale. Everything in the store is 10 to 50 percent off. Smart shoppers can get 10 percent off general goods, 20 percent off decorative accessories, and 20 to 50 percent off all furniture.
Admission is $5 for adults. Kids are free.
