Love City Triathlon Is First Week of September

Aug. 11, 2005 –– Get in shape for the seventh annual Love City Triathlon on Sept. 4.
It starts at 7 a.m. with a half-mile swim at Great Maho Bay. A 14-mile bicycle ride starts from Great Maho Bay. It heads around the island to finish near Annaberg Plantation. A four-mile run follows.
There are awards for men, women and relay teams. The sponsors, the St. John Landsharks, will also give an Inter-island team award. The winning team gets their name engraved on a perpetual trophy.
Participants must attend a pre-race meeting held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at Maho Bay Camps. The meeting is the last opportunity to register. There will be no registration on the morning of the triathlon.
Registration runs $30 for individual entries and $25 per person for relay teams. Participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag.
Forms can be picked up at Connections in Cruz Bay and at Endurance Sports stores at Sunny Isle shopping center on St. Croix and Port of Sale, St. Thomas.
Maho Bay Camps provides a complimentary stay the night before the race for participants. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico residents can take advantage of the usual summer local rate to stay additional nights. That rate gives them half off, which means they'll pay $37.50 a night for two adults. Additional adults cost $12 a night more. Children are free.

Jodie Tanino, who is helping to organize the event, said it's not yet clear who will participate.
"It's possible St. Maarten will come again and try to sweep the awards, but you never know who's going to get a flat tire," she said.
At last year's event, a total of 77 people competed.
St. Maarten participants were the big winners. St. Maarten resident Dick Luttekes, a pharmacist, took first for the men with a time of 1:37:52. The woman's first place went to Saskia Schroten, a firefighter from St. Maarten with a time of 1:52:45.
The top relay team consisted of two St. John residents and a St. Croix resident. They had a time of 1:28:38. Carpenter Tory Lane of St. John swam the half mile. Jamie Keys, who works at Endurance Sports in St. Croix, did the bike portion, and Adam Thill, a carpenter from St. John, did the four-mile run between Annaberg and Francis Bay.
