One Flew over the Cuckoo’'s Nest, a dramatic comedy by Dale Wasserman, adapted from the novel by Ken Kesey, tells the story of a heroic rebel named McMurphy who tries to incite a rebellion among his fellow patients in a mental hospital. The flamboyant McMurphy, who wants to 'live free or die," was played by Kirk Douglas on Broadway and Jack Nicholson in the 1975 Oscar-winning film version of the play. Expressing his basic human rights and impulses, he protests against heavy-handed rules set by the supervisory nurse, and illegally stages a drinking party in the ward——all in the name of liberating his fellow patients and having a little fun. ‟Scarifying and powerful." N.Y. Times. ‟Funny, touching, and exciting." N.Y. Daily News. ‟Brilliant. The stuff of great theater." WQR Radio. ‟Transforms the audiences into one wild cheering section." WNYC Radio. ‟One of the finest, most meaningful and most moving plays of recent times." WPLX TV.
