U.S. National Youth Coach to Conduct Volleyball Camp for UVI

August 1, 2005 – The University of the Virgin Islands is proud to welcome Din Shibuya of the U.S. Youth National Volleyball Team coaching staff to St. Thomas. Shibuya will conduct an advanced volleyball camp for men ages 12 to 24 from Aug. 7 through 10 at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. According to the press release from UVI, Shibuya will also assist with the preparation of UVI volleyball teams for the upcoming season and provide opportunities for V.I. student athletes to showcase and develop their skills.
Scholarship and financial assistance are available for V.I. high school seniors to play intercollegiate volleyball.
He is on tour this summer with the U.S. Youth National Boys Team in Brazil, which he has been coaching since 2002. His Juniata College Division III men's team is the reigning three-time champion of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA). Shibuya is the 2004 and 2005 Coach of the Year, and he was also named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2004. He has produced ten American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-American honorees, including the National Players of the Year in 2004 and 2005.
A "volleyball rumble" featuring co-ed teams from the V.I. volleyball community will be held prior to camp registration activities at 2 p.m. on Aug. 7, at the Sports and Fitness Center. Teams of four, with at least one woman on each team, are invited to play in the rumble. A registration fee of $20 per team may be paid prior to the start of games. Admission to the rumble is free.
Volleyball camp registration will follow the rumble at 5 p.m. The UVI camp is for advanced volleyball players ages 12-24. The cost is $65. The camp officially begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8.
