UVI Extends Registration and Payment Deadline for Continuing Students
The University of the Virgin Islands has extended the deadline for continuing students to register and pay fall semester fees to 3 p.m. on Friday, August 12. Continuing students can avoid a $75 late fee by registering and paying fees by the August 12 deadline. Continuing students register via the Internet. UVI's fall semester classes will begin on Thursday, August 18. For more information call 693-1160 on St. Thomas and 692-4158 on St. Croix.

New Student Orientation and Registration Schedule Online
Orientation activities for new students enrolling at UVI's for fall semester 2005 begin on Sunday, August 14. Registration and fee payment is part of the new-student orientation. Orientation schedules are available from the UVI web site at www.uvi.edu.
Fall 2005 Faculty Convocation Scheduled August 15
UVI's Fall 2005 Faculty Convocation with Provost Al Hassan I. Musah is scheduled for Monday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. Convocation is mandatory for all full-time faculty. The session will be video-conferenced between Business room 110 (Chase Auditorium) and Teacher Education room 101 on the St. Thomas campus and Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus. Fall 2005 University Convocation Scheduled August 17
UVI's Fall 2005 University Convocation is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 17. Attendance is mandatory for UVI faculty and staff. UVI students and alumni are invited to attend. The session will be video-conferenced between the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses in Evans Center rooms 401 and 713 on St. Croix and in Business room 110 (Chase Auditorium) and Teacher Education room 101 on St. Thomas. Reichhold's Youth Moviemaking Workshop Premieres 'Dear Diary' August 6
Students enrolled in the fifth annual Youth Moviemaking Workshop at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will premiere a short feature film titled "Dear Diary" at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 at the Reichhold Center. The workshop is a seven-week summer program that provides hands-on experience in all aspects of movie production. It is supported by a grant from the Virgin Islands Law Enforcement Planning Commission. Saturday's premiere, which will be accompanied by silent movies, music video clips, public service announcements and short stories created during the workshop's first four weeks, is free and open to the public. UVI Sets Volleyball Camp with U.S. National Youth Coach
UVI will host Ken Shibuya of the U.S. Youth National Volleyball Team coaching staff at an advanced volleyball camp for males from August 7 through10 at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The camp, which costs $65, is geared towards advanced volleyball players ages 12-24. Camp registration is scheduled at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, at the Sports and Fitness Center. Preceding the registration, a "volleyball rumble" featuring four-person co-ed teams from the VI community will begin at 2 p.m. Admission for spectators is free. Oliver Samuels & Company to Perform in Virgin Islands August 12 – 14
Oliver Samuels and Company return to the Virgin Islands with presentations of Patrick Brown's hilarious new comedy "Ras Noah and the Hawk" at Island Center on St. Croix on August 12 and at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on August 13 and 14. "Ras Noah and The Hawk" is a Jamaican comedy loosely based on the biblical story of Noah and the Ark. Samuels is a popular Jamaican comedian and actor who has produced and appeared in numerous plays in Jamaica, the Caribbean, the U.S. and worldwide. The play is suitable for the family. Showtime is 8 p.m. For tickets contact the Reichhold Center's Ticketing Services at 693-1559. Tickets will be available at the usual Reichhold outlets beginning in August. Admission for the St. Croix show will be $25. At the Reichhold Center, tickets will be $35 for covered-section seats and $25 for uncovered-section seats.
Business Development Seminar Offered for Veterans on St. Thomas
A free Business Development Seminar for Veterans is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, at the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The seminar will cover writing and implementing an effective business plan, business financing and federal procurement options. The seminar is presented by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Virgin IslandsOffice of Veterans Affairs. Pre-registration is required. Proof of veteran status is required for free admission. For more information call 776-3206.
CES to Offer Safety Workshop for Tractor Operators on St. Croix
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a two-day Tractor and Machinery Safety Workshop on Thursday and Friday, August 4 -5. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix Campus. Classroom instruction will be supplemented by several hands-on demonstrations such as: skills and driving safety techniques; proper handling of tractor and implements during land preparation. Dr. Dennis Murphy, professor of Agricultural Engineering and certified safety professional from Penn State University will be available to cover various aspects of tractor and machinery hazards and safety. All interested governmental agencies and private organizations, as well as individual operators, are asked to call UVI Cooperative Extension Service at 692-4069 and register for the workshop by August 2. Certificates of completion will be awarded to participants.
Free Workshop on Diabetes Scheduled August 16 on St. Thomas
A free workshop on diabetes will be offered on St. Thomas from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, at the UVI Small Business Development Center's Nisky Center training facility. The workshop is offered by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program and the V.I. Department of Health Bureau of Nutrition Services. Participants will learn how much starchy food a diabetic can eat, how to determine serving sizes for starchy foods, how to count carbohydrates, and how to read nutrition food labels. Food demonstrations and food tasting will be presented and recipes will be available. For reservation details, contact Nutrition Services at 777-9251, 777-9241 or 776-7849.
