Few Details Provided on Escaped Prisoner

May 9, 2005 – The V.I. Police Department has provided few details about the escape of a female inmate from custody. The prisoner escaped around 5 p.m. Sunday as she was being transported to Juan F. Luis Hospital. Police authorities said Sunday night that 33-year-old Melinda Grant escaped in the vicinity of the Ricardo Richards Elementary School on the Melvin Evans Highway. Grant was described as being between 5 foot 8 inches and 5 foot 9 inches tall and wearing red coveralls at the time of her escape.
Authorities also had no information on why Grant was being transported to Luis Hospital. She was arrested last Thursday afternoon on charges of driving without a valid VI drivers license, negligent driving and operating a stolen vehicle. Grant was arrested after hitting another vehicle at Five Corners in Christiansted. Bail was set at $35,000 and unable to post bail, she had remanded to custody at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts should contact police at 778-2211 or 911.
