April 12, 2005 – Women from across the Southeastern United States (Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, and South Carolina) will come to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands to celebrate the 65th Southeast Regional Conference of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. held June 9-12, 2005 at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Hotel. The convention is comprised of plenary sessions workshops, social activities and community service.
On Friday, June 10, 2005 from 2-5 pm the women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will tour the city and visit some of the local merchants. The Public Meeting will be held on Friday, June 10, 2005 at 7pm and feature local dignitaries and special guests to bring greetings from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
On Saturday, June 11, 2005 from 2-5 pm the women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will take a Kontiki Cruise on a glass bottom boat. The national theme "The Power of Vision: Collaboration and Implementation" will be the theme for the conference. The Blue and Gold Awards Banquet, which is one of the highlights of the conference, will have a keynote speaker to challenge the sorority to continue to do "Greater Service, Greater Progress" which is our sorority motto.
On Sunday, June 12, 2005 at 8am local choir, musicians, and preacher at the Prayer Breakfast, which will conclude the regional conference, will bless the women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a social service, colligate sorority with over 450 chapters in the United States and the Caribbean with a membership of 75,000 predominately African American women. Headquarter in Cary, North Carolina Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven young schoolteachers. Although it began as a teacher's sorority, it now is comprised of women in all professions. The primary thrust of its national programs is the promotion of high scholastic attainment among youth. Noted members include authors April Sinclair and Cheryl Broussard, actress Victoria Rowell, singers Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Lana "MC Lyte" Moorer as well as artists Annie Lee and Brenda Joysmith.
