News Brief: Public Works Commissioner Resigns

March 10, 2005 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull "has accepted the resignation of Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood," effective 5 p.m. Friday.
No reason was given for Callwood's departure, in the Government House release announcing his resignation.
Attorney George Phillips will serve as acting commissioner beginning Saturday in the interim. The release said, "Phillips will have the powers and duties, and shall receive the salary and other amenities associated with the position of Commissioner of Public Works during the period he serves in the position."
Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg, chairman of the Senate Government Operations and Consumer Affairs Committee, has scheduled a public hearing with the Public Works Department for March 23 to discuss the state of the territory's roads, traffic congestion, Inspection Lane and Vitran bus service.
Donastorg said Thursday night he had also requested certain road repair contracts from Callwood but he was given the "run around."
Donastorg further said that Callwood had responded to him in a letter dated March 8 saying that neither he nor any member of his staff would attend the public hearing.
"We're still keeping the hearing," Donastorg said Thursday night, adding "there should be information readily available" for the new acting commissioner to present.
